Digitisation of Peruvian satirical newspapers, 1822-1918

Resumen

This pilot project aims to digitise 24 titles including Peruvian newspapers and magazines from 1822 to 1918, which contain information on political press, social life, and customs through illustrations and satirical texts about the government, public figures, the clergy, and society.Safeguarded in the Special Collections Area of the Library System - PUCP, these copies provide valuable primary sources for studying the evolution of political discourse, the role of satire in shaping public opinion, and power dynamics in Peruvian society. Additionally, these newspapers offer rich visual content, including cartoons, illustrations, and advertisements, providing a window into the visual culture of the period. This material is at risk of disappearing due to the condition of the paper. It disintegrates and becomes vulnerable with use, making the newspapers no longer accessible as they quickly break during handling. Its digitisation is urgent.
