Rethinking child and youth activism in challenging times

The landscape of child and youth activism is evolving, marked by the increasing prominence of movements such as climate strikes and collective voices advocating for social change. As researchers and supporting adults, it is crucial to move forward conceptual debates and methodologies that embraces the complexity of child and youth activism. While both ‘children and young people’s activism’ and ‘participatory methods’ with children and young people are highly popularised and used often as buzzwords or put into policy, practice, and research documents as jargon, there is still much critically reflective work needed to explore their interconnections more deeply. There is a tendency by adults either to adopt the romanticised hype of children and young people’s activism (of certain forms that align with ones’ interests), dismiss/discredit it, or push against it. Less space exists for the grey areas and complexities that arise. The literature more broadly and specifically in this special issue shows the complexity of understandings, perceptions, enactment, and realisation of children and young people’s activism.
