The aim of our pilot study is to optimize optical flow (OF) measurement of the frequency of finger tapping with the use of accelerometry in healthy volunteers. For data acquisition, an accelerometer was placed in the index finger of eight healthy volunteers. Then, they were asked to perform the experiment in two modalities: resting the elbow on a desk and raising the elbow off the desk. They were recorded by a cellphone and a computer. For data analysis, the videos were processed using OF algorithm; and data from accelerometer and OF were processed using the Fast Fourier Transform. The statistical results show a positive correlation between OF and the accelerometer for each modality. As a conclusion, we found that compared to accelerometry, optical flow accurately measured the frequency of repetitive finger tapping movements in healthy volunteers.
