2022-2024. Ethical reflexivity and remote research: Experiences from a pre-pandemic qualitative study with victims of political violence

In this contribution, we identify ethical challenges during a qualitative study with a group of female survivors of human rights abuses and reflect on potential implications for conducting digital qualitative research with survivors of political violence. Drawing from a narrative multiple case study on community engagement and family relationships with families of disappeared persons due to armed conflict in Perú, ethical reflections on dimensions of representation, positionality, and social
change are the starting point to explore challenges and possibilities of qualitative digital research. With this paper we seek to embrace a reflective research practice that is oriented on closely monitoring signs of potential harm in participants and aim to provide suggestions for digital research with vulnerable communities, such as the promotion of participants’ active role within local communities to counterbalance existing power asymmetries in the research relationship.
