By applying advanced correlation-based network analysis on metabolic and morphological profile of a potato association panel, our study managed to highlight the connection between fumarate and plant vigor. Based on known metabolic pathways and their intertwined relationships, our findings suggested that fumarate might be used as a metabolic marker for water-deficit stress in the potato tuber. The subsequent genome wide association study co-localized fumarate and plant vigor to four different SNPs, i.e. two of which were located in non-coding regions of the genome, one was located in a zinc finger protein, which has been shown in previous studies to exert important roles to sustain drought stress, and the fourth SNP was found in a gene of unknown function. The role of the unknown protein in association to water-deficit needs to be further investigated.
